Falcons Strengthen Pass Rush Strategy

Pass Rush Improvements on Display
The Atlanta Falcons showcased their determination to improve their pass rush during their recent rookie minicamp. New additions, including first-round draft picks Jalon Walker and James Pearce Jr., took the field alongside free agent acquisition Leonard Floyd. This restructuring comes after a disappointing performance in 2024, where the Falcons finished second to last in the league in sacks.
Intentional Changes for Defensive Strategy
Head Coach Raheem Morris expressed the need for improvement in the team's ability to generate sacks, stating, "I get beat up all year about not getting sacks, and that’s got to change." The franchise's effort to address this weakness was evident in their decision to specifically target edge rushers in the recent draft.
Walker, selected at 15th overall from Georgia, and Pearce, chosen at 26th after a trade with the Rams, are expected to play vital roles in enhancing the Falcons' defensive front. The team traded a first-round pick along with multiple selections to secure Pearce, emphasizing their commitment to fortifying the pass rush.
Last Season Overview and Future Goals
Following another disappointing season finishing at 8-9, the Falcons have not secured a playoff appearance since 2017. Adding pressure players who can impact gameplay significantly has become a priority. Morris noted that adding new faces to the defensive lineup was crucial for finding effective pass rush solutions.
During the minicamp, the Falcons featured 41 players, including both drafted and undrafted free agents, as they seek to build a more competitive roster moving forward.
