Dumars Returns as Pelicans Executive

Joe Dumars has taken on the role of president of basketball operations for the New Orleans Pelicans, marking his return to a leading executive position after more than a decade since his time with the Detroit Pistons.
Career Highlights with the Pistons
Dumars enjoyed a successful playing career, contributing significantly to the Detroit Pistons, where he spent 14 seasons and secured two NBA championships in the late 1980s. He gained recognition for his pivotal role in the ‘Bad Boys’ teams and was named NBA Finals MVP in 1990. Post-retirement, Dumars transitioned to the executive realm, leading the Pistons as president of basketball operations for 14 years, where he was honored as Executive of the Year in 2003.
Recent Roles and Responsibilities
Prior to his Pelicans appointment, Dumars served as executive vice president of basketball operations at the NBA league office, further enhancing his understanding of league operations. He also held the position of chief strategy officer with the Sacramento Kings, gaining vital industry experience that he will bring to his new role.
Pivotal Decisions for the Future
In Dumars' new capacity, he will collaborate closely with general manager Bryson Graham and head coach Willie Green. A key area of focus will involve strategic decisions regarding star player Zion Williamson, who has encountered significant injury challenges since being selected first overall in the 2019 draft.
Aiming for Improvement
The Pelicans wrapped up the last season with a disappointing record of 21 wins and 61 losses, placing them among the lowest in the league standings. With Dumars' extensive executive experience and strategic vision, the franchise hopes to address its challenges and enhance competitiveness moving forward.
