Luke Loucks Named FSU Basketball Coach

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Florida State University has announced Luke Loucks as the head coach for its men’s basketball program, effective following the completion of the current season. At 34 years of age, Loucks takes over the role from Leonard Hamilton, who has decided to step down.
Loucks’ Background and Experience
The Clearwater, Florida native played for the Seminoles between 2008 and 2012. During his collegiate career, he was part of a team that won the ACC Tournament title in 2012, where they achieved significant victories over teams like Miami and Duke.
Prior to this new appointment, Loucks served as an assistant coach with the Sacramento Kings starting in 2022. His coaching experience also includes a stint with the Golden State Warriors, contributing to championship wins in 2017 and 2018, and involvement with the Phoenix Suns.
Coaching Philosophy
While Loucks has not previously held a head coaching position at either the college or professional level, his extensive exposure to coaching greats such as Steve Kerr and Mike Brown has provided him unique insights into coaching strategies and player development. His focus on defensive tactics in Sacramento aligns with the priorities set by Hamilton during his tenure.
Transition and Expectations
The Seminoles ended the regular season with a 17-14 record, earning them the No. 11 seed for the upcoming ACC tournament. Athletic Director Michael Alford noted that the search for a new coach included various candidates from both collegiate and professional ranks. However, the decision was made to promote Loucks rather than pursue high buyouts for existing college coaches.
Loucks conveyed his enthusiasm for his new responsibilities, emphasizing his dedication to fostering a culture of excellence on and off the court. He stated, "I am privileged to have seen firsthand what winning feels like at Florida State, and I am hungry for more."
Looking Ahead
Hamilton acknowledged Loucks’ contributions as a player and expressed confidence in his potential as a coach, marking a significant step in Loucks' career. As Florida State gears up for the ACC tournament, there is an optimistic outlook for the team's future under Loucks’ guidance.
