Allegations Rock Bangladesh Women's Cricket
Serious Claims from Jahanara Alam
Jahanara Alam, a key player for the Bangladesh women's cricket team, has made serious allegations against her captain, Nigar Sultana. Alam, who is 32 years old and has taken 108 wickets in her career, claims that Sultana has been physically abusive towards younger players on the team.
Concerns Over Team Environment
In a recent interview, Alam shared that some junior players have expressed fear about Sultana's behavior. She mentioned that during the ODI World Cup 2025, juniors told her they were hesitant to participate in certain activities due to the fear of being slapped by Sultana. Alam stated, "I heard from some people, 'I got beaten up yesterday.'" This raises concerns about the team environment and the well-being of the players.
Claims of Unequal Treatment
Alam also pointed out issues within the cricketing system in Bangladesh. She suggested that only a few players receive better treatment and facilities, while the majority struggle. "Everyone in the Bangladesh team is more or less a victim. Everyone's suffering is different," she said. Alam believes that the treatment of senior players has worsened since 2021, when she was made captain of one of the teams in the Bangladesh Games.
Bangladesh Cricket Board's Response
The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has denied all allegations made by Alam, calling them "deliberate, ill-intentioned, and seemingly aimed at undermining the spirit and confidence of a team that continues to represent the country with pride." The BCB stated that the claims are baseless and fabricated, expressing disappointment that such remarks were made at a time when the women's team is showing progress on the international stage.
