Norway's Ski Championships Face Financial Crisis

Upcoming Championships at Stake
The Norwegian Ski Federation is set to organize the U23 and Junior World Championships at Granåsen from March 3 to 8, 2026. However, recent financial challenges have cast doubt on the event's feasibility, stemming from significant deficits reported from past championships.
Funding Failure
Initial expectations indicated a surplus exceeding $2 million from the 2023 Ski World Championships, intended to support future events, including the U23 and Junior championships. A budget of approximately $300,000 was allocated for these upcoming tournaments. Unfortunately, financial issues have emerged from the Ski World Championships in 2025, leading to a lack of available funding.
Challenges Ahead
Event manager Terje Lund has voiced concerns about the implications of the funding shortfall, especially since both the federation and the municipality of Trondheim are obligated to facilitate these events. "We currently do not have clarity on how we will finance the championships, which adds layers of difficulty to our situation," he mentioned.
Organizers Struggling
Granåsen Aktivum AS, responsible for the organization of the events at the World Championship facility, is in a difficult position due to the absence of a definitive budget or agreement with the Ski Federation. This uncertainty regarding funding is likely to impede essential preparations for the upcoming tournaments, intensifying the challenges faced by the organizers.
Immediate Actions Required
Swift action is critical to secure the necessary agreements and funding for ensuring the championships' success. Daniel Myrmæl Helgestad, managing director of the organizing company Norway Events, stressed the urgency, warning that delays in reaching agreements could lead to setbacks similar to those encountered by the financially beleaguered Ski World Championships.
Conclusion
The existing financial crisis poses a significant threat to the future of skiing events in Norway. Without immediate resolutions, the viability of hosting the U23 and Junior World Championships—and other prominent events—remains uncertain, jeopardizing the region's reputation within the international skiing community.
