Olympic Dreams Deferred
Citizenship Complications
Yuka Orihara, a Japanese figure skater, and her partner Juho Pirinen, a Finnish skater, will not participate in the upcoming Winter Olympics in Milan. This decision stems from Orihara's failure to secure Finnish citizenship in time. Despite her commitment to the process, her application encountered significant hurdles as she did not obtain a permanent residence permit earlier this summer, which has stymied her path to citizenship.
Skating Aspirations
Since moving to Finland in 2019 to enhance her figure skating career, Orihara quickly partnered with Pirinen. The duo has made notable progress in their performances, notably securing 14th place at last winter’s World Championships in Boston, which was instrumental in qualifying for the Olympics. However, their Olympic participation will not materialize this year.
Legal Restrictions
Mari Luukkonen, who oversees citizenship processes at the Finnish Immigration Service, emphasized that Finnish law does not permit exceptions for expedited naturalization applications for athletes. This unwavering adherence to regulations has left Orihara's case without recourse for immediate citizenship.
