Liam Lawson's Engineer Named for 2025

Liam Lawson's New Role
Liam Lawson is set to take on a significant challenge in the 2025 Formula 1 season as he joins Red Bull Racing. His race engineer will be Richard Wood, who previously worked with Sergio Perez as his performance engineer. Wood has experience in this role, having filled in for Perez's regular engineer during a brief absence last year.
Lawson's Promotion from Sister Team
Lawson's promotion to Red Bull follows his participation in 11 races over two seasons with the sister team, Racing Bulls. The 22-year-old New Zealander was selected to replace Perez after the latter's disappointing performance in the 2024 season.
Red Bull's Internal Restructuring
In addition to Lawson's promotion, Red Bull has undergone internal changes. Gianpiero Lambiase will continue as Verstappen's race engineer while also taking on additional responsibilities as head of racing. This restructuring comes after Jonathan Wheatley departed as sporting director to become team principal of Sauber starting in April 2025.
Managing Expectations for Lawson
Christian Horner, the team principal, has emphasized the importance of easing Lawson into his new role without overwhelming him. He stated that the team is focused on providing a supportive environment as Lawson transitions to competing alongside four-time world champion Max Verstappen. Currently, Lawson is engaged in simulator work to prepare for the upcoming season.
