Verstappen Eyes Endurance Racing Future

Max Verstappen, a leading Formula 1 driver, has long had aspirations to participate in endurance racing, particularly the Le Mans 24 Hours. His recent GT3 test with Emil Frey Racing at the Nurburgring-Nordschleife, where he raced under the alias Franz Hermann, has intensified speculation about his interest in the Nurburgring 24 Hours.
Obtaining the FIA License
To compete in endurance races, drivers must obtain a specific FIA license. Verstappen successfully acquired this license shortly before the F1 Spanish Grand Prix, stating that the application process was straightforward. A form and a payment were all it took to receive confirmation within a week, categorized as a platinum-level license holder—the highest classification offered.
Significance of the Platinum License
Verstappen was granted a platinum license directly due to his Formula 1 superlicense, which qualifies all F1 drivers for this top-tier classification. Currently, a select few of his peers in F1 hold the same status. This platinum license enables him to enter prestigious endurance races such as Le Mans, an event he has been vocal about wanting to compete in.

Even though he possesses the necessary license, participating in the Nurburgring 24 Hours is uncertain. This is due to a unique orientation process required for this particular event, which involves classroom sessions and competing in two specific Nurburgring events. However, due to time constraints, Verstappen will be unable to meet these requirements before this year’s race.
Future Racing Possibilities
While the Nurburgring 24 Hours may not be feasible this year, his license allows him entry into GT3 events, such as the 24 Hours of Spa. He is affiliated with his own team, Verstappen.com Racing, though it seems unlikely he will compete due to existing commitments and the team's eligibility criteria.
The Role of Red Bull
Christian Horner, team principal of Red Bull Racing, has recognized Verstappen's enthusiasm for motorsport beyond F1, yet he emphasized that any additional racing commitments must align well with his F1 responsibilities. Red Bull's advisor has mentioned that potential opportunities for Verstappen may arise in the fall, allowing him to consider endurance racing.
Family Aspirations
Additionally, Verstappen has expressed a desire to race alongside his father, Jos Verstappen. However, Jos currently holds a gold license due to a classification downgrade after a period of inactivity in motorsport, complicating their potential joint participation in high-tier events.
