Derek Holmes, the head coach of the Finnish men's ice hockey national team during the 1960-1961 season, has passed away. He died on November 24 at the age of 86. Holmes was a well-known figure in the ice hockey community.
Coaching Career
Holmes was not only the coach for Finland but also led the national teams of Canada and Switzerland. Remarkably, he began coaching the Lions at just 21 years old. Under his guidance, Finland competed in the 1961 World Championships held in Switzerland, finishing in seventh place.
Recognition
In recognition of his contributions to the sport, Holmes was inducted into the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) Hall of Fame in 1999. His impact on ice hockey continues to be remembered by fans and players alike.
