Norway's Defensive Challenges Ahead

With the upcoming match against Italy on June 6, Norway's national football team is currently assessing its defensive lineup. Coach Ståle Solbakken has identified several issues with the center-backs, as various players encounter challenges.
Center-Back Issues
Leo Østigård has had a difficult season at Hoffenheim, resulting in both a red card and an own goal. His performance ratings have been notably low, significantly impacting his confidence. Kristoffer Ajer, another key player, has seen minimal action with Brentford, missing out on several matches due to a minor injury. His last notable performance was on March 8, and he has struggled to regain his starting position.
Variable Player Performance
Other defenders have also experienced fluctuations in form. Andreas Hanche-Olsen continues to appear in matches but has not stood out. Torbjørn Heggem is noted for consistent appearances in the English second tier, which presents its own set of challenges. Additionally, Stian Gregersen faces a prolonged absence due to injury, and Sondre Langås is expected to undergo knee surgery.

Ståle Solbakken expressed concerns regarding Østigård's recent performances, stating, "He has been a bit unlucky." Nevertheless, he acknowledges that Østigård has made positive contributions during matches, despite the unfortunate situations that have arisen. On the other hand, Andreas Hanche-Olsen is gradually increasing his playing time after a period of absence.
Looking Ahead
As the team prepares to gather, Solbakken is optimistic about the recovery of Kristoffer Ajer and underlined the importance of a tailored training plan for Heggem after a long break. He notes the overall chaotic nature of player availability, a challenge typically faced before international fixtures, but remains hopeful as Norway's defense continues to adapt.
