Spann Steps Up in UFC Debut

LAS VEGAS – Ryan Spann is poised to start his journey in the heavyweight division at UFC Fight Night 254, moving up from light heavyweight where he previously competed. Spann (22-10 MMA, 8-5 UFC) will debut against Waldo Cortes-Acosta (12-1 MMA, 5-1 UFC) during the event at the UFC Apex.
Transitioning to Heavyweight
Spann’s decision to change divisions comes after an extensive period at 205 pounds. He has taken steps to increase his weight while aiming to maintain his speed and agility. "This is the new look, but this isn’t the final form of the new look," Spann shared, emphasizing his commitment to develop further in this new weight class.
Coping with Weight Cuts
In his previous division, Spann often faced challenges related to weight cutting, which he feels affected his training effectiveness. He has expressed enthusiasm about removing that burden, suggesting it will enable him to fight more freely and true to his style. "(I just need to) have fun, trust the process," he stated, indicating a positive mindset as he enters this significant phase of his career.
Previous Achievements
In light heavyweight, Spann secured victories against notable fighters like Ovince Saint Preux and Dominick Reyes, and he recently finished a bout in just 95 seconds, earning Performance of the Night honors. As he prepares to face Cortes-Acosta, Spann remains focused on showcasing the skills that brought him success in his previous division.
Overall Perspective
Spann's approach reflects a dedication to improvement and adaptation within the competitive landscape of mixed martial arts. He acknowledges that the journey in heavyweight will take time but is optimistic about what lies ahead. Regardless of the outcome on debut night, Spann’s evolution as a fighter is set to continue.
