Victor Johansson Aims for Gold
Record-Breaking Performance
Victor Johansson made a strong start at the short course European Championships in Lublin, Poland. During the heats of the 400 meter freestyle, he finished with a time of 3:37.73, breaking his own Swedish record of 3:39.35 that had stood for eight years.
Looking Ahead to Finals
The finals for the 400 meter freestyle will take place on Tuesday evening. Johansson expressed his excitement about the possibility of winning his first medal at a senior championship. He noted, "I have been fourth before in championships, so of course it would be fun to get a medal. But I can't control what the others do; I can only focus on my times."
Challenges of Short Course Swimming
Johansson, who is known for his distance swimming, explained that in short course events, swimmers spend a lot of time underwater. He mentioned that during races, they can be underwater for up to 60% of the time, especially during starts and turns. This means he could swim about 3.2 kilometers underwater over the six days of competition.
